Sparrow Modern Italian Restaurant

507 North Blvd, Edmond, OK 73034

Gets a Medicare Jet-Setters Groovy Review

My friend Becky Grantham invited me to join her for happy hour at The Sparrow. I can't find an address, I told her as I scrolled Google for The Raven. "It's by Boulevard Steakhouse," she explained.

I had to laugh as I drove in that direction. Becky said, "The Sparrow," but I heard, "The Raven."

I had my birds mixed up. Once I spotted The Sparrow and her car sitting in the parking lot, I realized the error of my ways.

Becky picked a winner! The Sparrow Modern Italian Restaurant is upscale, bright, cheery, excellent service, and basically, I see it as Italian perfection.

Becky and I sat at the bar. She had a lovely wine, and I decided to try one of the happy hour specialty cocktails featured for five dollars. I chose an Italian cocktail named the Sgroppino. The Sgroppino is a combination of sorbet, Crème de Violette, and Prosseco. The drink takes on a violet tint with pink undertones of color. I love the adventure of being introduced to new flavors and combinations of both drinks and food.

I noticed almost everyone else sitting at the bar enjoying this gooey, cheesy, buttery, and bubbling bread served in a cast-iron skillet. My mouth started to water, watching the other guests eating this fantastic messy bread. I guess they saw me staring and said, "These are the garlic knots. You must order some. They are the best food ever created."

How could I resist? Becky and I enjoyed sharing our garlic knots. They were irresistible and created lively conversation at the bar as everyone discussed their deliciousness. Becky described the knots accurately as "Pure naughtiness."

We watched as our bartender put one colossal square block of ice in each of the drinks he was making. Next, he had a stamp with a sparrow on it. He pushed the sparrow into the top of the ice, and when he pulled it out, viola, the ice now had the sparrow imprinted into it. I must be a country bumpkin, or this is something new because I had never seen ice stamping done before.

We learned the bartender's name is Easton Edwards. I said, "That sounds like a movie star's name."

Easton gave us a Tom Cruise million-dollar smile and said, "In two weeks, I am leaving for New York to become an actor. I am going to live my dream."

Becky and I knew Easton was brilliant. He would not have to look back on his life someday and say I should have. We had his picture taken with us so we can say, "We knew him when."

For our entrees, Becky chose spinach, crab, + goat cheese ravioli. Both of us are goat cheese fans. If you love goat cheese, this dish is calling your name. The Sparrow makes this dish from local goat cheese. I love it when chefs use neighborhood products.

I had my favorite food, spaghetti + meatballs. My spaghetti noodles were cooked just right, the Pomodoro sauce a delight to the taste buds, and the hint of fresh basil has made The Sparrow my favorite place for my favorite food, spaghetti.

I don't know what it is when Becky and I go out, but we somehow always end up sharing a chocolate dessert. The rest of the time, we both work so hard on eating right. We shared a flourless chocolate torte with wild berry sorbet and vanilla cream. Just by the description, you can tell how decadent this dessert tastes.

I can't wait to make a return trip to The Sparrow. We wish Easton much success in New York. Becky and I suggest you give The Sparrow a try. You will thank us for this recommendation.

The Sparrow gets a Medicare Jet-Setter groovy rating for taking Italian to new heights.
